Cardiac Carboy

File under

Cardiac Carboy is a band of amateur musicians and former members of the Adobe Skyscraper Sewer Workers Union (ASSWU). Emmerick Smang on drums, Strom Wordwerk on bass, Garrett Logger on keys, Reggie Kate on rhythm guitar and lead vocals, and Willie-Harv Endo on lead guitar. The formation of Cardiac Carboy was in part due to an ASSWU ceremony in which Willie-Harv Endo was asked to serenade newly treated water on its reintroduction to the city's main water system. Willie-Harv understood this as howling guitar tones through the underground, though would later learn he was meant to find a local band to play at the water treatment facility. Willie-Harv achieved this by welding a pipe to his amplifier that connected to the main water supply system, the idea being that customers of the Adobe Skyscraper Water District would be able to hear the guitar through faucets in homes. This worked but only for a small number of customers in the immediate vicinity of the water treatment facility, who having never heard of ASSWU or this ceremony, complained about noises from their spickets. The president of ASSWU attempted to put a stop to Willie-Harv by publicly berating him at the ceremony. The public embarrassment of Willie-Harv generated public empathy and demand for his noises to travel through the water pipes. The other would-be members backed Willie-Harv on his idea and asked to help. For this reason, Cardiac Carboy is rarely heard outside of the kitchen faucet or bathroom sink. Their first album, Shadow Bodies was recorded as a preliminary rehearsal for the 1984 Freshwater Serenade, an annual event still begrudgingly hosted by ASSWU.
